Lisandro Martínez Criticizes Manchester United Hierarchy After Atlético Madrid Defeat
After a 2-0 defeat at Atlético Madrid, Lisandro Martínez blamed Manchester United's hierarchy for lack of investment, reflecting on the club's struggles this season.
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez has openly expressed his frustration with the club's hierarchy following their disappointing 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League. The Argentine defender pointed to a lack of investment in the squad as a key factor behind the team's ongoing struggles this season.
The match, played on 13 October 2026, saw goals from Atlético's Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman secure a comfortable win for the Spanish side. Martínez described the result as a "mirror" reflecting the current state of the club, indicating that issues run deeper than just the players and coaching staff.
Martínez's comments highlight growing concerns within the United camp about the club's transfer strategy and overall support from the board. He emphasized that blaming the coach or players alone would be simplistic and that the lack of sufficient reinforcements has contributed to the team's poor performances.
Manchester United’s struggles this season have been notable, with the team failing to find consistent form in both domestic and European competitions. Martínez’s remarks suggest a player-led call for the board to take responsibility and act decisively to strengthen the squad.
While the defender refrained from direct criticism of the coaching staff, his pointed reference to "other areas" of the club underscores a perceived disconnect between the playing squad and the club’s upper management. This internal tension could influence United’s approach in the upcoming transfer windows.
Looking ahead, Manchester United face crucial fixtures that could define their season both in the Premier League and the Champions League. The club’s ability to respond to these challenges, possibly through strategic signings, will be key to reversing their fortunes and satisfying the demands of players like Martínez.
