Liverpool Maintain Perfect Penalty Record Against Chelsea to Reach Carabao Cup Quarters
Liverpool defeated Chelsea on penalties at Anfield in the Carabao Cup fourth round, continuing their flawless record in shootouts against the Blues and advancing to the quarter finals.
Liverpool have advanced to the Carabao Cup quarter finals after another nail-biting penalty shootout win over Chelsea at Anfield. The match remained deadlocked through regular and extra time, pushing the tie to penalties where Liverpool once again held the upper hand.
This victory marks the fifth time Liverpool have eliminated Chelsea via penalties, extending a long-standing and remarkable dominance in shootouts. The rivalry in penalty shootouts between the two sides has been a recurring drama for nearly two decades, with Chelsea falling short in key moments such as the 2007 Champions League semi-final, the 2019 UEFA Super Cup final, and both the FA and League Cup finals in 2022.
The decisive moment came when Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana’s penalty attempt sailed high over the Kop, handing Liverpool the advantage. Chelsea had chances to turn the tide, notably when Emmanuel Emegha’s effort was superbly saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who played a pivotal role in securing the shootout win for the hosts.
For Liverpool, this win under manager Andoni Iraola not only ensures progression in the competition but also reinforces the team’s confidence in high-pressure knockout scenarios. Their consistent success in penalty shootouts against Chelsea highlights a psychological edge that Liverpool have maintained over their rivals in crucial moments.
On the other hand, Chelsea, led by Xabi Alonso, must confront their ongoing penalty shootout struggles against Liverpool. This latest defeat adds to a pattern of missed opportunities and mental hurdles that have plagued the Blues in shootouts for years. Addressing this issue will be vital if they are to advance further in future cup competitions.
Looking ahead, Liverpool will prepare for their quarter final fixture buoyed by momentum and a proven penalty shootout record. Chelsea will now shift focus back to their Premier League campaign, aiming to regroup and rebuild confidence after this Carabao Cup exit.
